Reconstruction of the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Children’s Hospital

‘Baltijos Plienas’ has started the reconstruction of the Infectious Diseases Clinic building at Kaunas Clinics to expand the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit of the Children’s Diseases Clinic and to provide better treatment conditions. The aim of the project is not only to modernise and expand the existing space, but also to ensure the highest standards of functionality and comfort.

‘Baltijos Plienas’ is building a new paediatric intensive care unit in a private courtyard. This extension will be connected to the existing eastern wing and glass gallery, without affecting the heritage part of the building. The new wing will have an area of approximately 261 m² and will include three single wards, a resuscitation area with four beds, a doctor’s station, an equipment area, a medication storage room, as well as laundry and waiting rooms.

An important aspect is the alignment of the floor levels to ensure smooth movement between the existing and the new rooms. A ramp and stairs will be provided. The yard will also be landscaped, with the restoration of the lawn and the installation of a walkway.

The renovation includes not only the refurbishment of the existing premises, but also complex contracting works, including the installation of monolithic slabs, masonry work and new engineering systems. The walls of the building will be constructed of silicate bricks and insulated with 250 mm of wool. The internal partitions will be made of plasterboard with sound insulation. The roof will be tiled, with modern insulation materials complying with fire class B roof (t1).

The functionality of the premises is given high priority: the wards and the resuscitation area will be fitted with anti-static PVC carpeting, the corridors and ancillary areas with homogeneous PVC carpeting and the basement with stone tiles. Walls will be painted with washable, chemical-resistant paints and patient areas will have protective plastic strips and corners.

One of the biggest challenges of this project is the construction between the existing buildings and the gallery, which requires the demolition of part of the structure to make way for the poles, the rostrum and the floor. The reconstruction of the domestic sewage network is also challenging, with a depth of 5-6 metres, which will require both open and closed construction using specialised machinery and engineering solutions.

After the reconstruction, the paediatric intensive care unit will be significantly expanded, with more wards, a doctor’s station and additional medical equipment rooms. This will allow us to admit more sick children, provide them with better care and better treatment conditions.

‘Baltijos Plienas’ specializes in complex contract works and strives to ensure the highest quality construction processes that will meet the most modern construction standards and serve our clients for many years!
